FSSAI Steps Up Food Safety Crackdown: Over 150 Notices Issued to Major Brands

FSSAI Issues 150+ Notices to Nestle, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola and More

India's food safety regulator has intensified its enforcement drive, issuing more than 150 notices to food and beverage businesses over alleged misleading advertisements, false claims and violations of labelling requirements.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) announced the action as part of its recent enforcement activities against food business operators across the country. The crackdown has brought several well-known food, beverage and consumer brands under regulatory scrutiny.

Major Food and Beverage Brands Face FSSAI Action

According to FSSAI, notices have been issued to a number of prominent companies, including Nestlé India, PepsiCo India, Coca-Cola India, Abbott India, Red Bull India, Danone India, Monster Energy India, Mondelez India, Ferrero India and Kenvue.

Companies operating in the energy drink and alcoholic beverage categories have also faced regulatory action. FSSAI said that products from several businesses were seized in connection with violations identified during enforcement activities.

The regulator's focus includes claims made in advertising as well as information and claims displayed on food product labels.

E-Commerce Platforms Also Under the Scanner

The enforcement drive has extended beyond manufacturers and brand owners.

FSSAI said it issued 12 notices to major e-commerce platforms, including Amazon and Flipkart. In one significant action, the regulator reported that an Amazon warehouse licence had been cancelled.

The move highlights the growing scrutiny of how food products are marketed and sold through online marketplaces.

Restaurants and Food Chains Face Action

The crackdown has also reached the food-service industry.

More than 30 notices have reportedly been issued to restaurants and food-service businesses, including KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Domino's and Costa Coffee.

FSSAI also said that five Domino's licences were suspended as part of its recent enforcement measures.

The regulator had previously taken action involving several five-star hotels as well.

What Does This Mean for Consumers?

The latest enforcement campaign signals tighter scrutiny of food-related advertising and labelling in India.

For consumers, accurate labels and advertising are important because they help people understand what a product contains and what benefits or characteristics can reasonably be expected from it.

FSSAI said several companies have already begun taking corrective measures after receiving notices. These actions may involve changing product labels, modifying advertising claims or making other compliance-related corrections.

Why FSSAI's Action Matters

The latest crackdown demonstrates that food safety enforcement is increasingly extending across the entire food supply chain — from manufacturers and beverage companies to online marketplaces and restaurants.

With more than 150 notices issued in recent months, the regulator's message is clear: food businesses are expected to comply with safety standards, labelling requirements and rules governing advertising and product claims.

For consumers, it is another reminder to pay attention to product labels and to distinguish between genuine nutritional information and promotional claims.
